About the Deschutes River
The
headwaters of the Deschutes River is Little Lava Lake, a lake in the
Cascade Mountains located approximately 26 miles (42 km) northwest of the
city of
LaPine. The river flows south into Crane Prairie Reservoir then into a
second reservoir (the Wickiup Reservoir, from there it heads past
Sunriver into
Bend Oregon.
The river continues north from Bend, past the city of
Redmond and through the central Oregon desert; the
river carves a gorge and provides world class fishing for
Redside
Trout
and Rainbow Trout. There is no fish ladder at Round Butte Dam so
all steelhead fishing is performed in the river below this area.
Central Oregon Guide
Excellent sportfishing for steelhead is available
here and your central Oregon guide Kevin Marshall
knows this area well. There are two main sections of the river that are popular for both
fishing and whitewater rafting; The upstream section, a short segment
upriver from Bend Oregon to Warm Springs, and the lower and more heavily
used section from Warm Springs downstream to its mouth
at the
Columbia.

Oregon Chinook Salmon
Of
the five species of Pacific salmon, the Chinook and
Coho are the most
important to anglers. The Chinook is the larger of the two
and highly prized among anglers. The Deschutes River is a prime
area to target Chinook salmon.
Chinook are also known as the king salmon or
spring
salmon. At the end of a fishing
line, Chinooks are absolute brutes - hard-running, stubborn fighters
that will give you all the challenge you can handle, and sometimes more.

"I provide
boat access to some of the best steelhead waters on the
Deschutes River,
Clackamas River and Sandy River. The Clackamas is an urban river and the Deschutes River
and Sandy River are a bit more wild. On most of these trips we back bounce
bait and/or lures with great success. With lots of bright, wild, native
steelhead along with ample runs of hatchery steelhead you can see why these
are some of the top steelhead fishing adventures in Oregon".
